Striped Killifish (Fundulus majalis)

Striped killifish (Fundulus majalis) are a large species of fundulid killifish endemic to the coastal waters of the eastern United States from New Hampshire south to Florida and through the Gulf of Mexico. Striped killifish are sexually dimorphic with the males having vertical black stripes and the mature females having horizontal black stripes along their body. These are a large killifish that can reach lengths of up to 8”, with 5”-6” being more common. 

For those who have always dreamed of keeping striped bass in aquaria, but lack the space, a female striped killifish may be the closest visual representation you can get to having one. These impressive killifish are very active and can be sensitive to water quality, making good filtration and plenty of space a must. 

Currently available animals are field-collected. 

Care Level: Intermediate-advanced. 

Salinity (SG): 1.012-full marine. 

Diet: Omnivores that feed heavily on various aquatic invertebrates. Not picky in aquarium and will except a variety of foods. 

Adult Size: Up to 8”. 5”-7” is more typical. 

pH: 7.4-8.5

Water Temp: 60-79F

Other Care Preferences: Does best in higher salinities.
