Panther crabs (Parathelphusa pantherina) are a beautiful species of freshwater crab from Lake Matano and surrounding waters on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. They are normally found in shallow waters close to the shore where they hide amongst rocks, driftwood, roots, and other structure. Panther crabs are nocturnal and will be most active at night, when they scavenge for food.
These crabs are fully-aquatic but will emerge if tank structures allow. For this reason it is important to have a tight fitting lid, as they can climb out if the opportunity is provided. Panther crabs are a moderately sized crab and can reach up to 5” across. They can be kept together but should be given ample amounts of space and structure to establish territories as they can become territorial with each other. Take care when housing them with any fish as they will eat anything they can grab.
Water temperatures should be kept between 76F-85F and their pH should be over 7.4. As long as they are kept with appropriate water parameters this species is very hardy and makes for an awesome captive.
Currently available animals are imported from Indonesia.
