Cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus)

Cunner  (Tautogolabrus adslersus) are a personable species of wrasse native to the northwestern Atlantic, from the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to the Chesapeake Bay. They can be found near inshore structure and are often found around tautog (Tautoga onitis), which they are occasionally confused with. Often considered a pest species by fishermen but usually appreciated by diver for their gregarious nature. 

Care Level: Beginner-intermediate. 

Salinity (SG): 1.19-full marine. 

Diet: Primarily carnivorous, feeding on various aquatic invertebrates and small fish. Not picky in aquarium and will except a variety of foods. 

Adult Size: 10”-12” is typical although fish exceeding 15” have been caught. 

pH: 7.5-8.5

Water Temp: 60-75F
