Asian shore crabs (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) are an attractive, semi-aquatic species of crab native to the coasts of China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. They have become a common invasive species throughout the coast of New England, first becoming noticed in New Jersey in 1988. It is believed they came over in ballast water of cargo ships from Asia. They are extremely hardy and adaptable crabs that can thrive at a wide range of temperatures and salinities. Asian shore crabs are most commonly found in rocky intertidal habitats where they scavenge for various invertebrates, other crabs, small fish, and decaying plant matter.
In captivity these crabs will do well in a semi-aquatic habitat and medium-salinity brackish water through full-strength seawater.
